NRL Wheelchair Rugby League has an established programs in NSW and Canberra for over 10 years and over the past few years expanded to Queensland and the Northern Territory. In late 2022 expansion into Victoria was initiated. As an inclusive sport and a variation of the running game, the modified program allows athletes with disabilities to compete with and against people without disability in an accessible setting that promotes inclusion and diversity.
This project looks to support and record the introduction and implementation of the wheelchair Rugby League program in Victoria. It will create a resource that photographs and documents the initial stages of the implementation along with the establishment of state-based support, resource development and activities including Come and Try sessions and skill development sessions.
The Wes Smythe award will assist the club in supporting inclusion through resources including wheelchairs and court time. Funding from this award would allow NRL Wheelchair Rugby League Victoria Inc to purchase a junior size chair and court time that can support the initial program skill development session for juniors.
